The Chinese state-funded Wuhan Institute of Virology has denied the accusations, and also other U.S. officials have downplayed their likelihood. Most professionals are of the belief that the virus started in a market selling wildlife in Wuhan and it was initially on animals and it moved to people. On Thursday the
U.S. President Donald Trump said he was so sure that the coronavirus may have started in a Chinese virology lab, but refused to describe the evidence, creating tensions with Beijing over the origins of the deadly pandemic.
Trump did not hesitate to share his thought at the White House event on Thursday, when he was questioned if he had seen the proof that gave him a “high level of confidence” that the virus originated from Wuhan Institute of Virology.
“Yes, yes I have,” he said, but refused to give further details. “I can’t tell you that. I’m not permittedto tell you that.”
Trump has shown increasing irritation with China over the past few weeks over the pandemic, which has lead to the death of thousands of people in the United States alone, it also ignited an economic contraction and threatened his chances of re-election in November.
The Republican president said previously his administration was trying to find out whether the coronavirus came from the Wuhan lab, following media reports it may have been man made at a China state-backed laboratory or maybe escaped from such a facility.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday it is not certain if the virus truly came from the lab.
“We don’t know if it came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. We don’t know if it originated from the wet market or another different place. We don’t have answers to those questions,” Pompeo said in an interview with Newsradio 1040.
The spread of the coronavirus, which leads to a respiratory disease COVID-19, has assisted to the continues drift between the Trump administration and China. Beijing theory is that it is most likely that the U.S. military came with the virus to China and Trump has said China did not alert the world of the risks in a timely and clear fashion.
Trump also said on Thursday chances are there that China either failed to stop the spread of the coronavirus or they let it spread. He refused to say whether he held Chinese President Xi Jinping responsible for what he feels is misinformation about the origins of the coronavirus.
This is whatTrump said of China’s efforts to get to the bottom of how the virus emerged: “At least they are trying to be somewhat clear with us.”
“But we’re going to find out. You’ll soon know in the not-too-distant future. But it’s a sad thing that happened whether they made a mistake or whether it started off as a mistake and they continued to make another one. Or it was deliberately done on purpose by someone?” he said.
Trump told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday that he was looking at various alternative’s in terms of consequences for Beijing over the virus. “I can do a lot,” he said.
