Health Ministe Zweli Mkhize, says his department is thrilled about the breakthrough of a new drug that has been tested for controlling the spread of Covid-19.

Tuesday evening a statement was released , Mkhize says the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy) trial is showing promising results.
“The trial has shared results on the therapeutic merits of low dose dexamethasone which are very promising and can be easily enforced in our country.
“Dexamethasone is a popular and widely used steroid which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It is mainly used for allergic reactions, asthma and other conditions where the inflammatory aspect of the disease needs to be managed for better outcomes,” says the minister.
Mkhize says he is happy that the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19 has given an advisory for clinical implemention of these break through study results.
The minister has also shared that South Africa’s coronavirus total stands at 76 334 cases, 2801 which are new cases.
The death toll has increased to 1625 after 57 people passed away in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday.
