Purpose of the Job

Join us in creating an eCommerce team that will reinvent online shopping across Africa. The Shoprite Group is Africa’s largest retailer with over 35 million customers and 2,500 outlets. We are digitally transforming the business, and in doing so, are looking for highly talented people to join our eCommerce team and shape the face of online shopping in Africa. The eCommerce Merchandising Manager will be responsible for building and running the merchandising function of the non-foods eCommerce offering, across brands, including sales, the selection of the online product range and the merchandising and promotion of this range.

Job Objectives

The eCommerce Merchandising Manager will take responsibility of the following:

– Select the non-foods product range which best promotes the offer and maximises sales

– Work closely with existing Shoprite buying groups in the selection of this range, based on existing in-store purchase behavior

– The effective digital merchandising of the product range:

– overall layout and look and feel of the offer – effective search and discover ability

– implementation of site merchandising strategies – product page optimisation

– promotions strategy

– To conceptualise and implement the promotions strategy for the offer

– For designing the catalogue functionality and data structures required to merchandise the range and maximise the customer shopping experience

– To manage and oversee product catalogue and product coordination teams to ensure the integrity of the product catalogue is maintained at all times

– For setting sales KPIs for agreement by management and delivering and reporting sales against these KPIs

– To work closely with BI and Development teams to deliver a highly personalised customer experience

– For building out an excellent sales and merchandising team, depending on the size of the business at the time of employment

– To continually contribute towards a culture of excellence and ambition

– To maintain an attitude of accountability, integrity and excellence


Bachelor degree in Business, Engineering or Marketing


5 years + experience in a Management position within the retail function of an eCommerce retail business 5 years + experience in working with Product Merchandising 2 years + experience in working with Hybris Commerce

Knowledge and Skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills A track record of analytical thinking and problem solving A flair for sales, merchandising and customer experience People management experience and team leadership Flexibility to manage a business that can operate 24/7/365 A desire to continually learn, improve and go the extra mile An attitude of accountability and excellence
